INSAIT (Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology) is a leading research institute in Sofia, Bulgaria, focused on advancing computer science, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. Established in partnership with Sofia University, ETH Zurich, and EPFL, INSAIT aims to position Bulgaria as a global center for scientific excellence and innovation.
The institute conducts cutting-edge research in machine learning, computer vision, robotics, natural language processing, algorithms, cybersecurity, and related fields. It attracts top international researchers and collaborates with renowned academic and industry partners worldwide. As the first host of an ELLIS unit in Eastern Europe, INSAIT plays an important role in strengthening the region’s AI research ecosystem.
Beyond research, INSAIT supports education, technology transfer, and entrepreneurship, helping develop local talent and foster deep-tech innovation. Since its launch in 2022, the institute has gained international recognition through high-impact research and contributions to the global AI community.
Role within TWIN-X
INSAIT leads Work Package 7 (WP7): Trustworthy and Explainable AI. This work package focuses on ensuring that the project’s AI methods are transparent, reliable, fair, and aligned with ethical and regulatory requirements, particularly in the context of healthcare applications.
The INSAIT team develops advanced approaches that provide interpretable predictions and decision support while maintaining high performance. The researchers work closely with partners across the consortium to integrate explainability, robustness, uncertainty estimation, and bias assessment into the AI pipeline. Through WP7, INSAIT helps ensure that the project delivers AI solutions that are not only accurate, but also transparent, accountable, and trustworthy.
