The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) is Lithuania's largest institution of higher education for biomedical sciences, integrating studies, research, and clinical practice within a single organisation. LSMU comprises a Medical Academy and a Veterinary Academy, with seven faculties, four research institutes, and around 8,000 students, more than 20% of whom are international. Its research spans molecular mechanisms to population-based public health, and it hosts WHO Collaborating Centers for chronic non-communicable disease prevention and for nursing. Clinically, LSMU operates the largest practice base in the country, the Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno klinikos, together with LSMU Kaunas Hospital, providing tertiary cardiovascular and oncological care for patients from across Lithuania. The Department of Cardiology, which leads LSMU's participation in TWIN-X, combines advanced cardiovascular imaging with an active clinical research program and strong national and international collaboration.
Role within TWIN-X
Within TWIN-X, LSMU leads the cardiology demonstrator of the TWIN-X DT EVAL study, a retrospective multicentre validation of the digital twin in cardiomyopathy and coronary artery disease. LSMU defines endpoints such as major adverse cardiac events, heart failure hospitalisation, and ejection fraction decline; coordinates analyses across contributing sites; and produces the interim and final cardiology demonstrator reports. LSMU also contributes cardiology cohorts and expert readouts for external validation and calibration across sites and vendors, tests the clinical text and longitudinal timeline pipelines, validates patient-level timelines on cardiovascular cohorts, and provides blinded clinical readouts and adjudication of discordant cases for multimodal benchmarking. In WP7, LSMU supports bias, fairness, and human factors evaluation, leading work on acceptability, equity, and patient-reported outcomes, and coordinating sex- and gender-aware analyses. LSMU further serves as clinical faculty in the TWIN-X training program for clinicians and data scientists.
